• If you simply cut the edges with regular scissors, they will wear out over time
• Solution: After a simple cutting edge, use a lighter to burn the edge just cut, so that the burrs of the edge are melted and solidified, so that the cut edge will not be easily scattered and worn.
• Weeding is usually not required unless you have an invasive type like horse grass, in which case it is recommended that you treat the area first to eradicate it. It's important to note that any untreated horsegrass-type weeds will eventually pass, no matter how much overlap you do.
• Remove large rocks, branches, and prepare the surface by stepping on any soil lumps.
• Make sure the edge of the bed you are covering is low enough for the material and its covering, and still below the grass. If necessary, use a shovel to remove dirt. If you don't, you will forever rake anything you put on your lawn.
• Overlap material underfoot enough to keep all regular weeds out. When overlapping edges, make sure to do so in the same direction. This way you can throw the bark in the direction of the overlapping material without lifting it up.
• Stretch material before placing nails in place. Letting it loose will allow your top material to get under the unsightly looking material and allow weeds to pass through.
• When making a border edge, cut the material 6" longer than desired, then tuck it neatly underneath, then nail the two layers. Edges that are cut precisely to the border will wear off over time and look unsightly.
